- find one (1) example of unspoken language
In Japan two norms that are very interesting are unwelcome mats and that all books are sealed. In Japan around tourist areas they put unwelcome mats for foreigners. This is almost like a do not disturb sign outside their house. In Japan they want it to be quiet and most mats say please be quiet so they can have their peace in their home The other norm in Japan is that all books are sealed in a plastic wrap. This practice prevents people from spending long periods of time browsing magazines without making a purchase In Japan the social stratification is split up into three classes, upper class, middle class and lower class. The way that defines what social class you are in is based on power, money and social status. Each class is then divided even further. The upper class is divided into two different classes, the royal family and the business class. The royal family consists of the ancient Japanese royal family who ruled over Japan for many centuries, they don’t rule today but still are at the top of the social pyramid. The other part of the upper class is the business class. These are the large company business owners. Since they control most of the economy in Japan they are at the top of the social pyramid. The next class is the middle class or otherwise known as the service class. This class consists of two subclasses, the low scale businessmen and the servicemen. Low scale businessmen own small shops around japan and don’t make as much money as the businessmen in the upper class The servicemen in the middle class work for large companies but do the jobs to make the company run. The final class is the lower class or the labor class. These people are those who work for the lowest wages as well as those who receive government financial assistance. In Japan the most useful unspoken language is body language. In Japan one thing they will find offensive is if you look them in the eyes because you seem rude or aggressive. Another unspoken communication is if a Japanese person starts to hiss at you with clenched teeth they are disapproving of what you are saying, reluctant to answer, or thinking. Japan has many things different and some similarities with American culture that is what makes it an interesting culture to learn about.
